Update Baseband 06.15.00 With Redsn0w iPhone 3G / 3Gs

iPhone Dev Team released redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 5 recently with the functionality to update iPhone’s baseband with iPad baseband, making it unlockable with ultrasn0w 1.2.

To unlock your iPhone with baseband 05.14.02 or 05.15.04 we first need to upgrade them to baseband 06.15.00 from iOS 3.2.2 for iPad to be able to unlock it using ultrasn0w 1.2.

To perform the update of the baseband of iPhone on Mac OS or Windows using redsn0w, follow this tutorial.

Required Downloads:

WARNING: Do NOT update your iPhone firmware to 4.2.1 if you are currently on iOS 4.1 and follow this tutorial to upgrade iphone baseband to 06.15.00 using pwnagetool  unlock edition.

If you are currently on 4.2.1 then you’ll have a tethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS new bootrom.

  • iPhone 3G are untethered up to iOS 4.2.1
  • iPhone 3GS old with bootrom are untethered up to iOS 4.2.1
  • iPhone 3GS new bootrom are untethered up to iOS 4.1
  • iPhone 3GS new bootrom are tethered with iOS 4.2.1

Upgrade iPhone baseband to 06.15.00 using redsn0w

1. Update your iPhone iOS to 4.2.1 from iTunes if not done already

2. Launch redsn0w 0.9.6b5 ( for windows seven use compatibility mode to windows xp ) and select the ipsw firmware 4.2.1 file and wait for redsn0w to identify the firmware. (Note: windows users should right click redsn0w.exe icon and run as administrator)

3. From the next options list, select Install Cydia and Install iPad baseband options and click next. You will be warned on the next step with a notice describing the drawbacks of updating your iPhone baseband with iPad iOS 3.2.2 baseband 06.15.00.

4. Redsn0w will ask you to enter your iPhone in DFU mode by following the on screen instructions. After that keep following the instructions and your device will be jailbroken in some time.

This process will jailbreak your iPhone, making it ready to be unlocked using ultrasn0w 1.2 from cydia.

I have jailbroken iPhone 3G, and if I do only “install iPad baseband” phone will be ok?

    • Nabeel

if you upgrade your baseband to 06.15.00 iPad one, it will unlock, but this method is not recommended if you don’t need it.

    Greetings!

    I have Jailbroken Iphone 3G with modem firmware 05.15.04 and Verision 4.2.1 ( 8C148 )

and the question is do i have only to clik on the button istall the ipad baseband without the cydia instalation?

and will the unlocking remove all my apps from Iphone?

    Please Reply really needed, thanks!

    • Nabeel

you need to install cydia to unlock it (to install ultrasn0w in later step)

      unlocking will not remove anything

I ended up figuring it out. I read more of the comments, and then ran it in XP compatability mode because I couldn’t set the affinity, and read about compatibility somewhere else. I also only checked cydia and the ipad baseband :D

    • Nabeel

thanks for the comment, updated the article with this tip

it works! it took me forever however because I didn’t know it had to be done under XP compatability. you may want to throw that in there for all us common folk! :)

Hi Nabeel, Thanks for the instructions, but I’m having a small problem as my iPhone 3g is already 4.2.1 and is currently on bb 05.15.04 your process is what I need.but when i open redsnow to browse for ipsw firmware 4.2.1 it doesn’t recognize it.so I’m snookered from step 1..and I’ve got xp so theres no need to change the compatibility..
can you help me out on this..if you can?
    Cheers man

    • Nabeel

did you download the correct / compatible versions of redsn0w and the ipsw file?

  11. Evita

    Hey!

Great tutorial, although when I tick the “update baseband” box in redsn0w it runs for a while and then redsn0w crashes..!

    • Nabeel

try on different system, let me know if it still crashes

      also, try running as administrator

  12. Mehul

    same problem wid me
    it crashes at baseband fetching

  13. CHANN cambodia

    Thanks a lot bro..
    It working full!

  14. Vijay

Thanx Nabeel. It worked. However, I never had to do step 4 as I believe this step would have occured when I updated iOS from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1 this evening during which my Firmware version got upgraded to 05.15.04.
Since I couldnt unlock it, I did step 1,2,3 mentioned above & my carrier sprang up.
Since ultrasn0w was already run, I didnt have to run it to unlock.
    Thanx a ton..friend..

Sorry I am a total newB, I don’t do this within itunes?

    Thanks :)

    • Dr. Nabeel

nat you should consult some professional to do it for you instead of trying yourself if you’re not comfortable with the procedure.

  17. Nabeel

I don’t have these specifications with me currently! sorry can’t do much! although I’ll try to check these steps once again on my iPhone from win 7 64 bit though and let you know later today hopefully! (do remind me if I fail to do so!)

  18. Nabeel

    glad to know that :)
