iPhone dev team released the updated version for redsn0w as Apple released iPhone OS 4 update today for the iPhone and iPod users. The new version of Redsn0w, 0.9.5 allows users to jailbreak their iPhone 3G and iPod 2G on iOS 4.0.
Please note, this jailbreak will also allow the users to use multitasking and wallpaper feature that apple turned off by default for iPhone 3G and iPod 2G users.
Redsn0w 0.9.5 is strictly only for those users of iPhone who are using official carrier cellular network and it don’t require any unlock. If you depend on unlocking or want to unlock your iPhone after jailbreaking it with some other jailbreaking tool then DO NOT follow this tutorial. How to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G & iPod 2G on iOS 4 using Redsn0w 0.9.5
After making sure that you have downloaded and installed the latest version of iTunes (9.2) folow these simple steps to jailbreak your Apple iPhone / iPod on windows and Mac OS, both.
1. Download iOS 4 and Update
Download the iOS 4.0 from here and install it using iTunes normally (using shift/option restore) over your iPhone 3G or iPod 2G.
Use the restore function instead of upgrade to avoid error 3002.
2. Download and run redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5
Once you have upgraded your iPhone / iPod to iOS 4.0 through itunes now its time to jailbreak it. To jailbreak your iOS 4.0 simply download:
redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 for windows (link not working: http://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-5.zip )
redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 for Mac OS (link not working: http://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_mac_0.9.5b5-5.zip )
extact the zip file and run the exe file in the download zip.
3. Select original ipsw file
Browse and select the original ipsw firmware file for your apple device. (download here)
4. Install Cydia
Now on the next screen select Install Cydia and if you wish to enable multi-tasking and homescreen wallpaper on your device, make sure that you select Enable Multitasking and Wallpaper. It also asks you if you want verbose boot (in redsn0w 0.9 beta 5-3 not 5-1 though)enabled Press next.
5. Turn off and Connect the device
Before connecting your iPhone or iPod to the computer via usb, make sure that your device is turned off. Once plugged in, click the next button again.
6. Put the device in DFU mode
The last step is to put your device in DFU mode (recovery mode). For this purpose, hold the power button at the top of your iphone/ ipod and hold the home button along with it for 10 seconds. When the apple logo appears on the screen of your apple device, leave the Power button while keep on holding the Home button for few more seconds. This will take your iPhone / iPod to dfu mode.
Once the device is in recovery/dfu mode, the installation process will begin automatically.It will take some time until jailbreaking of your device is complete. After your device restarts itself, it will mean that it’s all done now and your iOS 4.0 on iPond 3G / iPod touch 2G has now been successfully jailbroken by redsn0w along with enabling / disabling options to jailbreak your device.
You can re update your device with official final release of iOS 4.0 when ever you want to remove the jailbreak (again, not for those who rely on unlocking their iPhone to be used with their carrier)
