iPhone dev team released the updated version for redsn0w as Apple released iPhone OS 4 update today for the iPhone and iPod users. The new version of Redsn0w, 0.9.5 allows users to jailbreak their iPhone 3G and iPod 2G on iOS 4.0.
Please note, this jailbreak will also allow the users to use multitasking and wallpaper feature that apple turned off by default for iPhone 3G and iPod 2G users.
Redsn0w 0.9.5 is strictly only for those users of iPhone who are using official carrier cellular network and it don’t require any unlock. If you depend on unlocking or want to unlock your iPhone after jailbreaking it with some other jailbreaking tool then DO NOT follow this tutorial. How to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G & iPod 2G on iOS 4 using Redsn0w 0.9.5
After making sure that you have downloaded and installed the latest version of iTunes (9.2) folow these simple steps to jailbreak your Apple iPhone / iPod on windows and Mac OS, both.
1. Download iOS 4 and Update
Download the iOS 4.0 from here and install it using iTunes normally (using shift/option restore) over your iPhone 3G or iPod 2G.
Use the restore function instead of upgrade to avoid error 3002.
2. Download and run redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5
Once you have upgraded your iPhone / iPod to iOS 4.0 through itunes now its time to jailbreak it. To jailbreak your iOS 4.0 simply download:
redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 for windows (link not working: http://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-5.zip )
redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5 for Mac OS (link not working: http://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_mac_0.9.5b5-5.zip )
extact the zip file and run the exe file in the download zip.
3. Select original ipsw file
Browse and select the original ipsw firmware file for your apple device. (download here)
4. Install Cydia
Now on the next screen select Install Cydia and if you wish to enable multi-tasking and homescreen wallpaper on your device, make sure that you select Enable Multitasking and Wallpaper. It also asks you if you want verbose boot (in redsn0w 0.9 beta 5-3 not 5-1 though)enabled Press next.
5. Turn off and Connect the device
Before connecting your iPhone or iPod to the computer via usb, make sure that your device is turned off. Once plugged in, click the next button again.
6. Put the device in DFU mode
The last step is to put your device in DFU mode (recovery mode). For this purpose, hold the power button at the top of your iphone/ ipod and hold the home button along with it for 10 seconds. When the apple logo appears on the screen of your apple device, leave the Power button while keep on holding the Home button for few more seconds. This will take your iPhone / iPod to dfu mode.
Once the device is in recovery/dfu mode, the installation process will begin automatically.It will take some time until jailbreaking of your device is complete. After your device restarts itself, it will mean that it’s all done now and your iOS 4.0 on iPond 3G / iPod touch 2G has now been successfully jailbroken by redsn0w along with enabling / disabling options to jailbreak your device.
You can re update your device with official final release of iOS 4.0 when ever you want to remove the jailbreak (again, not for those who rely on unlocking their iPhone to be used with their carrier)

Ive been stuck on this for the past 6 hours:
i have an iphone 3g running os 4. I dont have a sim card in it, so i cant get past the emergency call screen. I do the redsn0w process, and the second time it says waiting for reboot, it just stays like that and doesnt do anything. I dont understand whats wrong with mine, and help would be greatly appreciated.
did you try upgrading your iPhone with fresh install form iTunes once again ?
yes iv tried restoring it through itunes and then trying redsn0w again but it still does the same thing.
make sure: you update the iphone from itunes and redsn0w with the same ipsw file that you downloaded.
also make sure that the version of redsn0w is 0.9.5 beta 5 build 3

I tried to do that, and it says ” the iphone could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible”
did you download the files listed in this article? please use the links given here (including the redsn0w) download them fresh.

can you try downloading the ipsw from here (according to your iphone) and restore with itunes first using this ipsw and then redsn0w

Its redsnow version 9.5.3, and thats where i got the ipsw from before. And itunes will not let me restore using any ipsw
did it allow you to upgrade / restore your iOS via itunes when you connect your iphone? or does it give sim card not supported or iphone not activated error?
I keep getting the error unable to recognize specified ipsw. I used the ipsw that downloaded in itunes and tried from many other sites. Any suggestions?

Yea ive been using for the 3gs from multiple sites. I tried from about 6 different dl’s. I chose from the itunes software update folder in appdata. I even dl about 4 different redsn0w 0.9.5 beta 5 build 3 and same error

Yes, i installed iOS 4.0 but reading on the dev team site i realized that redsn0w will only work on the 3g. Only the Pwnage tool will jailbreak the 3gs

hi.i jb my iphone 3g a week ago .i dont have a direct link but all i typed was 9.5.2 red snow.and it came up with a few pages like felix bruns and forums and on 1 of the forums it had 4 downds of redsn0w .i chose 9.5-3 which is hacktivation. im not on legit sim,then uodated to itunes. then used my custom firmware for redsn0w.worked perfect then used ultrasn0w 666.in cydia after it updated bout 10 minuites.ball ache but it was worth it. im looking for the same page now for my mate .so i will post it if it helps.thanks.deano
