Download iOS 4 Firmware for iPhone and iPod Touch

Apple has finally released it’s new iOS 4 (which was formerly termed as iPhoneOS 4) for all the supported devices including iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 2nd and 3rd Generation. Although some of the features are not supported by iPhone 3G and iPod 2nd Generation.

The new release for the Apple iOS firmware has over 100 new features including but not limited to multitasking, unified inbox, folders, ibooks, game center and iAd. The Apple iOS 4 will be pushed for Apple iPad later this year.

To get the new iOS 4 on your apple device you need to download iTunes 9.2 from the Apple website (or upgrade your current one) and connect your device with your computer / laptop. Click update adn there you go! (make sure that this will lock any unlocked and / or jailbroken iPhones / iPads).

However the update for iOS 4 is being rolled out slowly to users all accross the world. So if those of you who can’t wait, here are the direct links for the iOS 4 for iPhone and iPod touch :

Once you have successfully downloaded the firmware for your device, hit the update button while holding the Alt / Option key and browse the file you just downloaded to install it on your device.

Again, those who are using unlocked / jailbroken versions via Ultrasn0w or Blacksn0w to enable the cellular data service on their iPhone devices should not upgrade this version until the unlocking is released for it by dev team.

    Downloaded:
    1. iTunes to 9.2.1.5
    2. redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-5
    3. iPhone1,2_4.0.1_8A306_Restore
    4. iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore

Unable to locate *.ipsw file in both iphone restore folders.

    Any advise?

    • Nabeel

Tony, make sure that the ipsw name has extension is .ipsw and not .zip, if it’s .zip then rename it to .ipsw

  4. Karen

Hi, hope you can help me on this. I followed your step on fixing ‘unrecognized ipsw’ but I still get the same error. How do I ‘hit the update button while holding the Alt / Option key and browse the file you just downloaded to install it on your device.’ as you recommended?

    Have iPhone 3G running 4.0.2 (8A400). Model: MB496J

    Downloaded:
    1. iTunes to 9.2.1.5
    2. redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-3, 4, 5 (downloaded all to try)
    3. iPhone1,2_4.0.1_8A306_Restore
    4. iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore

It’ll be great if you could respond back to me with your earliest convenience.
    Thank you.

    Kind regards,

    Karen

Karen, make sure that the file that you downloaded is having extension “ipsw” (check the downloaded file itself on your hard disk) and not “zip”

If it is .zip, rename it to .ipsw

U guys, if u have an ipod/ iphone and wanna jailbreak, all u have to do is

    1) get iTunes to 9.2.1.5
    2. redsn0w_win_0.9.5b5-5
    3) connect to pc
    4) find the ispw and jailbreak

(note: if u have 4.0.2 and wanna jailbreak, u have to upload the 4.0 ispw on redsnow not 4.0.2)
